Alexander Porter is an Emmy award-winning immersive director, inventor, and artist. He is compelled to make documentary films and interactive work by adapting computational photography and emerging capture and simulation techniques towards subtle creative expression.

Alexander Porter is a director, inventor, and artist. He uses digital capture techniques to tell affective stories in immersive formats. Out of this creative practice he has defined a concept of 'volumetric filmmaking' through founding a leading immersive studio, and creating the first and most widely used software and community for volumetric video production. He strives to apply these often obtuse techniques to important or personal topics ranging from environmental justice, to mental health and fine art. Awards include an Emmy award, an Emmy nomination, multiple Webby awards, and other festival awards for immersive work. He was an inaugural member at New Inc and is a current resident at ONX. He teaches his approach to filmmaking at Johns Hopkins and previously at NYU.

Alexander Porter is a director, inventor, and artist who specializes in using immersive technologies to explore art and science through human experience. Currently, he's working on Topography, a multi-platform documentary on America's National Parks, and teaches his unique production approaches at Johns Hopkins at the first Immersive Media graduate program.

Porter uses experimental photographic techniques such as 3D scanning and volumetric capture to make complex concepts tangible, such as video game addiction, cyber warfare, urbanism, and ecology. Out of his practice he defined the concept of 'volumetric filmmaking' by founding a leading immersive studio and creating the first and most widely used software for volumetric video production.

Porter uses digital 'reality capture' techniques, including photogrammetry, game engines, volumetric capture, and computer vision, to tell interactive stories in immersive formats. He strives to apply these often alienating techniques to important human topics such as environmental justice through immersive and interactive documentaries.

Awards include an Emmy award, and nomination, Webby awards, and other festival awards for immersive work. Recent credits include Strata (Transmediale, 2023), Truth or Consequences (Co-Creator, Rotterdam, 2021), The Changing Same (EP, VF, Sundance, 2021), Blackout (Director, Tribeca Storyscapes, 2017), and the speculative Styles & Customs VR installation with DIS (Director, Carnegie Museum of Art, 2017). He was an inaugural member at New Inc at the New Museum and a resident at Onassis ONX Studio. Alexander has created music videos, immersive and interactive experiences, and fashion show visuals in collaboration with renowned artists such as Brian Eno, Kanye West, Thom Yorke, Rag & Bone, and DIS Magazine, among others. He teaches on virtual production, and generative AI in film at the world’s first immersive concentration Johns Hopkins’ film program, having previously taught at NYU’s ITP.
